An Interview With Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz

The Men Who Designed Simple Skincare Solutions

Malin + Goetz feels like one of those brands that we always had around, but it is not until 2004 that the brand was founded and ever since took off. From their apothecary in NYC in running one of the fastest-growing global skincare brands. We have sat down with Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz to find more about them and how the duo managed to deploy their dream and conquer the world of skincare.

Malin + Goetz has such a loyal following, how have you achieved that?

We have been telling our story for 15 years and do our best to maintain our focus and stay true to who we are as a brand. I like to believe that we also make a quality product, and customers reward us with their regular repeat purchases.

Who is the Malin + Goetz man?

Two things: He is not a specific age or is all ages but is also not an entry-level consumer. That is, he is educated and trading (up) to our brand. He is smart, sophisticated, and interested in quality.

With almost fifteen years down, what do you think is next for Malin + Goetz?

More of what we do. More stores (we now have 13), filling voids in our still small assortment of products, growing and expanding our limited wholesale distribution, and broadening our online customer base who is seeking access and replenishment.

How would you describe Malin + Goetz to someone who had has never heard of it?

We make skincare easy, starting with sensitive skin.

What would you say is a realistic grooming regime for a man?

Something easy, like what we offer. Our concept is based on two steps: an effective yet gentle cleanser and moisturizer for perfect balance, every day.

What is your grooming routine?

Grapefruit Face Cleanser and Vitamin E Face Moisturizer, twice a day. I often integrate our Replenishing Face Serum when I need more. I use our Eye Gel during the day and Eye Cream at night. I also suffer from rosacea and eczema (and seborrhea and fragrance allergies) so I keep my routine to a highly effective less is more regimen.

How important is packaging and design to your company?

CRAZY IMPORTANT! Every product, store, and word is developed with aesthetics in mind. It is an attention to detail that helps to create solutions to concerns and offer beautiful things to make us feel good. Who doesn't want that in their lives?

Why has Malin + Goetz been able to thrive all of these years?

We work very hard to maintain our focus for the brand, quality, design, craftsmanship, and service. These are things that never go out of style.

How best would you describe a typical workday for you?

Dynamic and exhilarating. As an entrepreneur, we are often putting out fires while switching gears from product development to retail stores to manufacturing to public relations, etc. It is never dull and often exciting.

What's your golden rule of style?

Three things: dress simply for my age and body; maintain a fit and healthy weight; keep my skin clear while aging gracefully.

Which destination is top of your list for 2020?

Fez is up there.

What are your top packing tips?

Never take more than a carry on bag—ever. I travel with sample size products (ours, of course), two sample items of neutral colored clothing that can be re-worn (ex. Black suit coat, jeans, black sweater), and a few changes of undergarments that can be laundered during my trip.
