In 1923, Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii started creating Japan's first whiskey distillery in Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto, which then became the birthplace of Japanese whiskey. The first malt whiskey to originate from Japan, Yamazaki has contributed to the worldwide popularity of Japanese whiskey.
